why are the latin abbreviations used in english?

for example PhD it’s Doctor of Philosophy, but the Latin abbreviation is always used (PhilosopHiae Doctor).

What’s the cause behind this? Did it just remain from the past and they never changed it or so?

We were reviewing these terms in Social Studies. Just out of curiosity, I noticed that A.D. is Latin and B.C. is English. Does anyone know why?

Abbreviations Help ? Thank You !! :)?

What would the abbreviations in this sentence be ?
I know L. is for Latin , but I have no idea what O. Fr. (unless it’s originally from) and I really have no idea what pp. is . Thank you .
“1520s, from O.Fr. contaminer, from L. contaminatus, pp. of contaminare “to defile,” from contamen “contact, pollution,” from com- “together” + *tag-, base of tangere “to touch” (see tangent). Related: Contaminant (1934).”

When Is It Appropriate To Use “i.e.” And “e.g.” As Abbreviations Of “for Example” When Writing?

Do they have different meanings or are they interchangable? Also, my guess is that they are both initials for Latin words… bonus “atta boys” or “atta girls” for whomever can enlighten me.

What Is The Difference Between Latin Abbreviations “i.e.” And “e.g.”?

The abbreviation “i.e.” stands for the Latin “id est,” meaning “that is” or “that is to say.” It indicates that an explanation or paraphrase is about to follow: “Many workers expect to put in a forty-hour week — i.e., to work eight hours a day.”
The abbreviation “e.g.,” on the other hand, is short for the Latin exempli gratia, “for the sake of example,” or “for example.” A list of examples may be preceded by e.g.: “She loved exotic fruit, e.g., mangoes, passion fruit, and papayas.”
You use “e.g.” when you want to name a bunch of examples that will follow. (Like “He can do many things, e.g., play violin, shoot pool, write good short stories.”) Use “i.e.” when you have one particular thing in mind, and you’re actually trying to paraphrase the preceding sentence in a different, more specific way. (Like “He was a doctor, i.e., a veterinarian.”)
I hope that helps!
